Cedar Strong was established in 1994. At that time, the intent of the Agency was to offer a haven for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Our Transition House opened in a permanent location in 1995 and was officially named the Jean Scott Transition House. Jean Scott was a trailblazer for women?s equality and was instrumental in the creation of our Transition House. The Transition House is the cornerstone of the agency.

*The Job:*
This is a full time position working in a shelter providing food for up to 60 guests per day.
*JOB PROFILE*
*Job Summary:*
The Cook works as a member of the Cedar Strong Prevention and Intervention Society team responsible for creating a weekly (7 day) menu that is nutritious, suitable for a large and compromised clientele and reflects the budget in place. The Cook is responsible for producing dinner daily for guests staying or living at either the House of Hope or the Colonial. The menu is designed in accordance with accepted nutritional guidelines such as Canada?s Food Guide for Healthy Eating and reflective of the collective dietary needs of the clients.
The Cook is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and general maintenance of the kitchen and the production area, reporting any deficiencies in either areas to the Program Coordinator.
*Job Duties:*
*Cleaning & Safety:*
* Regularly cleans and maintains kitchen equipment and maintains the daily cleanliness of the kitchen
* Maintains a par stock of regularly used product and rotates based on ?best by? dates
*Record Keeping:*
* Creates an historical fie of weekly menus and recipes
* Ensures food purchases reflect the budget provided
* Purchases food with an eye to special pricing and seasonal surpluses
* Maintains records of food donations and builds free products into menu selections
* Maintains an inventory of non-perishable goods as well as perishable product
*Maintain Shelter Environment:*
* Creates and maintains a safe and secure Kitchen space
* Stores food items safely
* Works cooperatively with other members of the Shelter team
* Responsible for ensuring that the kitchen guidelines are respected
* Reports to Program Coordinator any pending concerns regarding safety or repairs.
*
*Miscellaneous:*
* Maintains professional boundaries within the Cedar Strong Code of Ethics and philosophy both internally and externally.
* Abides by all Cedar Strong polices as outlined in the Policy, Human Resources, Occupational Health and Safety manuals
* Exercises professional boundaries with guests, ex-guests , and other community agencies.
* Continues to upgrade skills through staff and professional development, engaging in mandatory and optional training
* Assists in orientation of new cooks, and practicum students.
* Attends bi-weekly staff meetings, staff workshops, and special events.
* Special projects as directed by the Program Coordinator or Housing Manager.
* Other duties as assigned.

*Working Conditions:*
The job requires working at the House of Hope. This position may work alongside another co-worker and/or on their own, often with minimal supervision.
